Introduce yourself and tell the readers about yourself:
I am a transgressive writer who enjoys writing about the dark and forbidden territories of human existence. I'm originally from Iran, where I grappled with the limitations imposed by the Islamic regime. Not only did I face the challenges of being a woman in such a society, but as a writer, I also had to contend with internal and ideological battles in order to navigate the strict publishing standards enforced by the 'Censorship Department' there. Growing up, I felt as though I was living within the pages of an Orwellian tale. The experience was painful, yet it was within that country that my thoughts were molded, and my disdain for any form of censorship took root. I have been featured in various publications, including Slut Vomit: An Anthology of Sex Work and Rythme of Missing Pieces. I am also the author of several novels and short story collections in both English and Persian (I go by a pseudonym in that language), namely A Chat with Blood, We Lost the Train, Starless Nights, The Legend of Kelpie, IDEO, Feminomaniacs, and Enaro. My recent mini short stories collection, Machinocracy, is now on pre-order as well. I also host collaborative anthology collections focusing on various themes. Current collaborative projects and published ones are Hikikomori, DiverCity, Sokut and Castle Bangkok (this book will be available next month). If you want to know more about me and keep up with my progress, you can find information on my website, NedaAria.Info.
What draws you to transgressive fiction?
I think it is the power of absurdity and freedom within the genre of transgressive fiction that draws me to this genre. Transgressive fiction has always held a profound allure for me, and the majority of the books I have read fall within this category. Through writing, transgressive fiction enables me to explore the boundaries of societal norms and venture fearlessly into forbidden territories of human actions and reactions. This genre allows me to delve into the intricate complexities of human behavior, pushing the limits of what society deems acceptable. It serves as a platform to illuminate the darker facets of human nature, unveiling the truths that lie beneath the surface. In my recent trilogy, I blended the concepts of dark romance and transgressive fiction to expose the intricate tapestry of emotions, love, and sexual desires. Without the existence of transgressive fiction, this trilogy would not have been possible. This genre challenges conventional moral codes and compels readers to confront uncomfortable and controversial topics, ultimately leading to a profound understanding of ourselves and society at large.
What are some central influences on your work?
In my writing journey, I have been influenced by a diverse range of authors from various literary traditions. The field of transgressive fiction has been shaped by notable writers such as Philip K. Dick, Sadegh Hedayat, Pauline Réage, Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, Anais Nin, Joseph Kressel, de Sade, Chuck Palahniuk, Franz Kafka, Aldous Huxley, and George Orwell. Their bold and unapologetic exploration of taboo subjects and unconventional narratives has inspired my own creative approach. Furthermore, I draw inspiration from classic and modern Japanese, American, French, and Russian literature, which has enriched my understanding of storytelling and the human condition.
Besides writing, you do a lot more. Mind telling the audience all you do?
I think I do a lot of things. Sometimes, too many things. Apart from a full time job, I offer innovative and flexible coaching to assist fellow writers in completing their projects of any kind. Through this coaching, I aim to provide guidance and support, helping writers navigate the creative process and overcome obstacles. I have a Ph.D. in Management with a minor in Innovation Technology & Trends, as well as a Master's and Bachelor's degree in Political Science and a Bachelor's degree in General Education. My educational background has contributed to my understanding of human behavior, motivation, and the impact of educational technology on learning experiences. As a researcher, I am passionate about studying these areas and finding ways to enhance the learning process. Creativity remains at the core of my being, and I continue to explore various avenues for self-expression. I also do book cover design and self publishing services and writing mentorships on occasion. You know as Shakespeare said I am "a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.”
Care to impart some writing wisdom?
Certainly! I actually have a free ebook for aspiring writers focusing on transgressive writing (link) Here are a few nuggets of writing wisdom I'd like to share:
Write without reading the first draft until it's finished: Give yourself the freedom to pour your thoughts onto the page without the pressure of immediate self-critique. Allow your ideas to flow uninterrupted, embracing the rawness and spontaneity of your initial creation. By temporarily setting aside the urge to revise, you create a space for uninhibited expression and exploration.
Be fearless in your writing. Dare to explore unconventional ideas and challenge societal norms. Your unique voice and perspective can bring a refreshing and thought-provoking experience to readers. Fight the idea of self censorship.
Embrace the darkness within. Uncover the raw and honest emotions that lie beneath the surface. Writing that delves into the depths of human experience can resonate deeply with readers.
Be brave and authentic. Don't shy away from saying what others may be afraid to say. Writing is a powerful tool for expressing truths, raising awareness, and initiating conversations that can bring about positive change.
Read widely and voraciously. Immerse yourself in different genres, styles, and cultures. This will broaden your horizons, expand your writing toolkit, and inspire you with fresh ideas.
Embrace the writing process and persevere. Writing is a journey that requires dedication and persistence. Embrace both the joys and challenges that come with it, and never give up on your passion.
Write to make a change: Harness the power of your words to challenge the status quo and inspire transformation. Writing has the potential to ignite conversations, challenge beliefs, and provoke thought. Use your voice to shed light on important issues, advocate for justice, and bring about positive change in the world.
